In Houston, we're pretty serious about our brunch. Whether it be migas and breakfast tacos or chicken and waffles and loaded Bloody Marys, we have no shortage of awesome spots to get our brunch on. Keeping later hours and killer cocktails in mind, we'll be taking a look at some of our favorite spots around town. See the complete list at the end of this post.
This week, it's all about Midtown.
Note: For the purposes of this post, Midtown is defined as south of I-45 (the Pierce Elevated), west of Highway 288, north of Highway 59 and east of Bagby (for the most part). See the map here.
Honorable Mention: Diner classics at Harry's (which falls just outside our borders), big Southern plates at Natachee's Supper 'n Punch, and $1 mimosas and Tex-Mex fare at Gloria's.
5. Cook & Collins Saturday 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Sunday 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The scene may be a bit clubby at this cool new kid on the block, but the brunch is seriously legit. Start with a gargantuan bacon-iced cinnamon roll for the table, then dive head first into C&C's menu of wacky creations, like the BBQ breakfast -- a root-beer-glazed pork belly served with mac and cheese and a blackberry muffin; or the Fat Elvis Pancakes -- bigger than your head banana hot cakes smothered with peanut butter, smoked bacon, and caramelized banana syrup. There's also an array of equally-as-enticing salads, flatbreads, burgers, and more.
Sangria, mimosas, and bellinis are available by the glass ($4 to $7) or carafe ($12 to $21), but its the shrimp-bacon-and-green tomato-adorned Tito's Bloody Mary ($10) that really wins our hearts.
4. the breakfast klub Saturday and Sunday 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Though it doesn't serve alcohol (which is usually a requirement for this list), some good ol' fashioned Southern cookin' was enough to earn this Midtown hotspot a place in our Top 5. There's a reason there is always a line out the door, after all. Order a supersized mug at the counter, then fill up with a solid selection of brews and wait for your glorious Southern breakfast to arrive. The wings and waffles are a thing of legends. And the crispy fried catfish and grits? It's made two of our food critics' 100 Favorite Dishes lists.
