One of our favorite ways to warm up over the holidays is with mulled wine. It may sound terrible, but trust us. This drink is dangerously addictive and so easy to make. Your only problem will be having enough.
Mulled wine is similar to warm sangria without the fruity sweetness. Instead, it has a soothing orange and spicy flavor. After your first sip, you will swear it is snowing again, and then you'll remember you live in Houston.
There are a bunch of different recipes for mulled wine, but this one is our favorite. If you need more of a festive kick, you can add dark rum or cognac after you heat the wine.
The recipe, after the jump.
Mulled Wine
- 1 bottle of cheap red wine
- 3 cinnamon sticks
- 4 whole cloves
- Pinch of ground allspice
- Peel of one large orange (without the white part)
- 1 whole star anise
- ½ cup of white sugar
Combine all the ingredients in a sauce pan and slowly heat. Do not boil. It should take about 20 minutes or less to heat.
On the off chance you have leftover mulled wine, you can store the leftovers for three to five days in the refrigerator. But, we highly doubt you will. Just simmer before serving.
