Robb Walsh's 100 Favorite Houston Dishes: #94 Chocolate-Peanut Butter Cake Ball at Coffee Groundz on Bagby

Over the course of the next few months, I'm counting down 100 of my favorite Houston dishes. I chose some because they are such quintessential Houston creations, others for their cultural or historical significance, and others because they are just so damn tasty. #94 Chocolate-Peanut Butter Cake Ball at Coffee Groundz on Bagby

The chocolate peanut butter cake ball at Coffee Groundz looks like an airy doughnut hole, but in fact it's an incredibly dense little ball of moist cake coated in a candy-like icing. The bakery that supplies Coffee Groundz is K&M Cake Ball Company in Conroe, one of several Conroe cake ball makers. Evidently this is a hot trend in Dallas, and we are playing cake ball catch-up down here.

The cake balls are one of several innovative coffee side orders at Coffee Groundz, Midtown's coolest espresso bar. The Trentino gelatos are outstanding. Try the dulce de leche flavor -- the caramel ice cream is streaked with dribbles of chocolate that taste like the outside of an ice cream bar. Just the thing to go with your cake ball.
