Retro Restaurant Signs: A Houston Retrospective

With so many of Houston's great culinary landmarks being either abandoned or demolished, we're just thankful that people captured pictures of them before another piece of our history was thoughtlessly thrown away like table scraps.

Although the Pig Stand (pictured above) is now nothing more than a memory -- its building sacrificed to the ever-expanding Washington Avenue strip and repurposed as a two-story sports bar -- there is hope yet for places like Felix Mexican Restaurant on Westheimer, which may be salvaged (and not demolished) for the Houston incarnation of popular Austin sushi restaurant Uchi.

Will they keep the sign? Unlikely. So enjoy our slideshow of the best Houston restaurant signs from classic days gone by. Some are still with us, others we mourn as victims of the city's increasingly voracious appetite for progress by any means necessary.
