The gingerbread house is an iconic Christmas image that conjures up warm feelings of holiday nostalgia. Though I have seen many gingerbread houses of all shapes and sizes, I have never actually made one. So when I heard about the House of Blues Gingerbread House Workshop, I was beyond excited.
For $45, you get a "Gingerbread Kit" which includes the gingerbread house and candy, a decorated chef's hat, unlimited hot cocoa, and two seats, which means you can either bring a kid to share in the festivities or find a friend to split the cost with you. I suppose you could try to make the kid pay their way, too, but children today always seems to be so broke. Damn child labor laws.
Anyway, after you get there, a "Gingerbread Expert" will be on hand with instructions to start you off, and then you can just go wild decorating the house with as much candy as you can possibly fit on cookie walls. And considering the amount of sweet goodies that will be ingested during the decorating process, I'm hoping to see some seriously cool houses built with the ingenuity that can only come from an intense sugar high. This weekend's workshops will run Saturday and Sunday, December 18 and 19, noon to 2 p.m. Reservations can be made through the House of Blues Sales office by calling 832-667-7755 Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
