This Week in Houston Food Blogs: Springtime Is Snow Ice Time

The weather is warming up, which means that cold treats are starting to sound like a good idea again. Tag Sale Tastes takes a trip to Nu Café, which creates beautiful mountains and hills of shaved ice that look like piles of lace. (Kaitlin Steinberg introduced us to the Taiwanese treat last year.) The frozen, airy concoction has a bit of milk but is lighter than ice cream, which means less heaviness and guilt later. There are two locations: 9889 Bellaire and 5901 Westheimer near the Galleria.

CocoDijon goes to Gusto Gourmet, a really interesting restaurant that features both Latin and Mediterranean dishes. They love the tequeños (a Venezuelan snack of fried dough cylinders stuffed with ingredients like cheese, turkey and plantains), antojo maracucho (twice fried green plantains topped with shredded beef or shredded chicken and cheese) and more.

With the newest additions of Samurai Ramen, 1801 Durham, and JINYA Ramen's Midtown location, 3201 Louisiana, Houston's ramen scene is hotter than ever. H-Town Chow Down makes a rare excursion to Chinatown and visits Tiger Den at 9889 Bellaire. There's more than just great ramen to be found here. There are also Brussels sprouts with chili sauce and donuts with Pandan cream.

We all need a little help in the kitchen sometimes. Where's My Gravy posted a helpful photojournal on the best way to deconstruct bell peppers. Once this part is done, it's easy to slice and dice the remainder as you wish.

In between figuring out March Madness (and basketball in general) Kim In A New(ish) City ventured to 1252 Tapas Bar in The Woodlands. Several dishes were easily converted to vegetarian versions and Kim loved several of them, including the Truffle Patatas Fritas (fried potatoes with truffle aioli) and the Boucheron goat cheese with honey, figs, walnuts and apple cider, all on top of a fresh slice of tomato.

The 4th Annual Houston Press BrewFest is coming up on Saturday, May 16. Steve at the All Good Beer blog has a post all about it, including ticket prices and a special discount code.

Finally, Hank On Food takes us on a New Orleans-inspired trip to The Rouxpour in Sugar Land Town Square, complete with video. Dining on three different type of chargrilled oysters and washing them down with a big ol' Hurricane sounds like a terrifc way to spend an afternoon.

That's it for This Week In Houston Food Blogs. If you know of others we should be checking out, please leave a comment or send an email. See you next week!
