Health Department Roundup: Cafe Pita+ Struggles, Tan Tan Stays Clean and More

The mid-week holiday has left us with a lot to catch up on. (Wednesday off? That's not America. That's not even Mexico.) So here's a quick and dirty, Hemmings-and-Jefferson-behind-the-barn-style roundup.

Bosnian BYOB Café Pita+ (10890 Westheimer) -- a favorite of ours, as well as of stylish, demure Guy Fieri -- had some serious problems during a routine inspection last week. It received the only Health Department citation of the past seven days (but no temporary closure order) after inspectors found six violations: insufficient dishwasher pressure (measured in kilopascals, which sounds unsettlingly French); towels not located at each hand-washing sink; unregistered, unapproved pesticide in use; tracking powder pesticide used; manager lacking proper certification; and, despite the prohibited preventive measures, "presence or insects/rodents/other pests not controlled."

Another local favorite, Oishii (3764 Richmond), earned six violations during an inspection last week. Inspectors found mislabeled bulk food; potentially hazardous food not held at proper temperatures; backflow prevention device not installed correctly; equipment/utensils not properly designed or maintained; hand-washing signs not visible at all sinks; and an employee eating in an unapproved area. After finding out what tracking powder is a few minutes ago, we're pretty all right with most of those.

Some good news: Tan Tan (8066 Westheimer) earned just one violation, for food stored in unclean or uncovered containers. It was corrected on site.

Sandong (9938 Bellaire) didn't fare quite as well; inspectors found half a dozen violations during a visit Sunday. Highlights include potentially hazardous food held at improper temperatures (corrected on site); Equipment/utensils/glassware/plates not handled in a way that prevents contamination; and single-service/single-use articles not stored in a way that prevents contamination.

Zake Sushi (2946 Shepherd) also joined the half-a-dozen-violations club. Their highlights: spoiled or mislabeled food (corrected on site); ice intended for human consumption used for cooling (corrected); and equipment in poor repair, not able to be maintained in a sanitary condition or toxic as a food-surface.

Finally, Khyber North Indian Grill (2510 Richmond) earned only two violations: dirty non-food-contact equipment surfaces (corrected on site) and equipment not designed or maintained properly. Put something about that on your sign, guys. Seriously.
