Fast Times: Whataburger's Grilled Chicken Salad

Last week's chicken sandwich was a caloric train wreck. If I'm going to live to keep writing this article each week, I've got to switch it up from time to time. Enter Whataburger's Grilled Chicken Salad. Who in their right mind gets a salad at Whataburger? Heck, until I did a little investigating, I didn't know they offered salads.

At first glance, this salad seemed a bit on the smallish side, even for the asking price of about $5. But the end result was a full tummy, so no complaints. Here's the nutritional rundown: 220 calories, 7 grams of fat (sans honey mustard dressing).

The salad comes with your choice of dressing and a small bag of croutons. It's a typical salad blend-- romaine lettuce, shredded carrots and red cabbage, and about five tomatoes. I love me some Whataburger grilled chicken. The warm, marinated breast meat rested nicely on the bed of chilled greens. Everything was fresh--the lettuce was crisp, and the tomatoes had a good burst of flavor. The tangy honey mustard dressing proved to be a solid choice as well.

Biggest surprise--the croutons. I find croutons in this setting are usually hard as rocks. Not here. They added a nice crunch to the salad but didn't put any dental work in jeopardy.

The Whataburger Grilled Chicken Salad was a hit.
