Have you really ever eaten bad huevos rancheros? I haven't. It typically comes down either a "very good" or "damn fine" ranking. La Plaza Mexican Restaurant's take on this Tex-Mex classic falls into the latter category.
For around $5, you get the picture above--two eggs over-easy, topped with that heavenly tomato chili sauce, and served alongside refried beans, shredded lettuce, and diced tomatoes. Add some fresh flour tortillas for mopping up the egg yolk/bean mixture, and you're in desayuno heaven.
My one complaint with the plate is the side of lettuce and tomatoes. It's pointless and typically gets scraped off. I wouldn't mind a papas fritas replacement.
The restaurant does not overdo the serving sizes. A heavy breakfast is never a good thing, so I appreciate the smaller portions that accompany the reasonable prices.
If you're flying solo and are in the mood for some quality entertainment, I highly recommend parking yourself at the counter. Watch the cook crank out breakfast after breakfast, only a few steps from your morning coffee. It's a comforting experience that's rare to find in our city.
One thing to note: La Plaza only accepts cash. No worries, you won't need much.
