The Politics of Food

Food & Foreign Policy

The World Affairs Council of Houston is best known for holding public events featuring foreign policy heavyweights such as former Secretaries of State Colin Powell and James Baker III.

However two upcoming programs will extend the Council's reach into food-related subjects.

On January 13, 2009, the Council will present a program entitled The Global Food Crisis featuring Dr. Edwin Price, currently Associate Vice Chancellor and the Director of the Norman Borlaug Institute for International Agriculture at Texas A&M. Dr. Price will discuss the impact of rising food prices on the most vulnerable regions of the world and the accompanying repercussions in global politics and security. The event is free for Council members.

Then on January 15, 2009, the Council's Young Professionals Program will host a wine making event at the Salud Winery in Houston. You read that right -- wine making. Frustrated amateur vintners can attend the event, mix up a batch of pre-fermented wine (aka grape juice), hand it over to Salud for fermentation, and then return in 45 days for a tasty bottle of private label, homemade vino. There is a fee for Council members and non-members.

Check out the Council website for more details on these events and how to become a member of this great Houston organization.
