McDonald's Mighty Wings: Surprisingly Awesome

For the past several months, fast-food chains have been doling out new menu items every chance they get. Taco Bell has the new Fiery Doritos Locos Taco, Burger King has the French Fry Stuffed Burger, and McDonald's now has Mighty Wings: bone-in crispy fried chicken wings. Yes, you read that correctly. These chicken wings actually have bones in them.

It seems as if McDonald's has figured out that real food sells more than the fake crap most places have concocted.

I taste-tested these Mighty Wings to see if they were really all that "mighty," and was quite surprised -- in a good way.

Mighty Wings come in packs of three, five or ten. Yes, they are a bit pricey, with the smallest package costing practically a buck per wing, but they are worth every penny.

Each wings order comes with a combination of wingettes and drumettes in a small cardboard box that can't contain the delightful smell of freshly fried chicken. Seriously, y'all, there isn't anything better than the smell of fried chicken.

I am not ashamed to say I couldn't wait to get home before diving into these; the aroma was too much to resist.

Each wing is coated in a spicy breading of cayenne and chile pepper, then deep-fried to golden, crispy perfection. And they are piping hot. You'll need a few napkins, because these suckers are greasy. However, the chicken breast is fall-off-the-bone tender, and that's what makes these wings quite possibly the best item on the McDonald's menu.

Keeping the meat on the bone makes these wings juicier and tastier than the alternative option of chicken nuggets. While the wings have twice as many calories as chicken nuggets (290 for three wings, 480 for five and 960 for ten), the extra calories are totally worth it for the overall taste.

With football season under way, McDonald's wants to cater to football fans with new options perfect for game day. The wings come with a variety of new sauces, including chipotle barbecue, sweet chili, spicy buffalo and hot mustard; you can also stick to the classic options of plain barbecue or ketchup.

Unfortunately, McDonald's will offer these wings only until November, so get them while you can. If customers show enough support for the Mighty Wings, maybe the food giant will add them to its regular menu.
