After much speculation as to the eventual the brick-and-mortar location of popular food truck Eatsie Boys, it was announced this morning that the food truck team will be moving into a space at 4100 Montrose.
Fans of Kraftsmen Cafe will recognize that address as the bakery's ivy-covered location between the Black Labrador Pub and the Freed-Montrose library branch housed in a converted church.
The location is popular not only for its beautiful, canopy-covered patio and ivy walls, but also for idiosyncratic touches on the property like a British red telephone box and a giant chess board (with giant chess pieces) outside the Black Lab. But fans will only have until the end of the month to enjoy a last few sandwiches there, because Kraftsmen is closing for good to make room for the Eatsie Boys.
Ginger Winship, operations manager for Kraftsmen, issued the following statement:
After 10 fabulous years, Kraftsmen Baking has decided to no longer maintain our cafe space at 4100 Montrose and we will be closing our doors March 31. We would like to thank our loyal customers, the Neartown/Montrose community, and the University of St. Thomas for a decade of patronage and support. We have nothing but fond memories of our time there.
Winship says that the bakery, owned by chef Scott Tycer, will continue to focus on growing its wholesale accounts (Kraftsmen supplies much of the bread used in many Houston restataurants) as well as its Heights cafe at 611 W. 22nd.
The loss of the Montrose location doesn't mean that Kraftsmen will remain a one-cafe operation however. Said Winship: "We expect to announce the location of our new second cafe in the next few months."
"In addition," she said, "Kraftsmen could not be more thrilled that the Eatsie Boys are moving into the space at 4100 Montrose. As huge supporters of the food truck community, we are incredibly excited about their progress and wish them as much success as possible."
Matt Marcus of the Eatsie Boys team said that their plans for the new restaurant include serving three meals a day -- breakfast, lunch and dinner -- and a few more ambitious items: serious coffee and charcuterie programs, an even more serious pastry program and some room for their signature ice creams and gelatos.

In the next few months we will be winding down street operations on our truck as we transition into the bricks and sticks; however, our truck is available for catering and private events. Down the line, the plan is to have to the truck parked frequently outside 8th Wonder brewery and visit our old stomping ground, Agora coffee shop.
The Eatsie Boys cafe plans to open this summer.
