Wine of the Week: Glögg

I've been dealing with a cold all week and thus a lack of taste and smell, so there's no wine tasting for today's Wine of the Week.

Last week, I ended up with an abundance of Seven, which I plan to turn into Glögg - Scandinavian mulled wine - as soon as we get another chilly week worthy of an evening by the crackling fire. Hence this tried-and-true recipe for your soon-to-be-favorite cold-weather drink: Glögg.

Glögg

Adapted from a recipe on About.com.

  • Juice of 2 large oranges
  • Whole cloves (about 10)
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 10 cardamom pods
  • 1 cup of brandy or cognac
  • ½ cup of citrus flavored liqueur
  • 2 tbsp of fresh orange zest
  • ½ cup of honey
  • 1 bottle of dry red wine
  • Optional - 1 tbsp each of slivered almonds and raisins in each individual serving

Combine all ingredients and simmer on low for at least an hour. Strain before serving, or place the spices and zest in cheesecloth while simmering to avoid the need to strain. Serve warm in a mug with a cinnamon stick or a fresh orange zest for a garnish, and, if using, raisins and almonds.
