Market Square's Fusion Taco Is Our New Spot for Pre-Theater Dining

Houston has a fantastic theater district, but somehow it seems the options for pre-show dining are few and far between. Sometimes, you simply don't have the time for a long, fancy meal. That's where Fusion Taco, the fast-casual concept from David Grossman and Julie Sharaby, comes in.

Before a recent show, we visited the taco truck's new Market Square storefront, and they had us at taco.

First, since you're going to the theater, you'll want some drinks. Grab a seat, then head up to the counter to consult the restaurant's well-crafted beer and wine list. On our visit, Sharaby was behind the counter pouring generous glasses of red.

As you sip on your glass of wine or pint of local brew, you can peruse the menu of tacos, salads, sandwiches, and quesadillas.

The tacos, mostly priced at just under $4, blur the boundaries of global cuisine, fusing tempura shrimp with jalapeño and wasabi, or char siu-glazed pork with black beans and corn salsa. They even have a beef short rib vindaloo taco, slow-cooked for 24 hours and piled high with a cucumber relish and creamy raita. All are fantastic, but the sweet and succulent Berkshire pulled pork just might have taken the cake.

For an extra 25 cents, order them crisp, or add on housemade crème fraîche or jack cheese. If your taco doesn't already come topped with it, a side of the red cabbage slaw adds the perfect acidic crunch.

Naturally, you'll want to try a few tacos here, so we suggest ordering a couple yourself and perhaps even splitting one of the restaurant's generous salads or huge quesadillas with a friend.

It will be more than enough food, but that's fine; you have a long, dramatic night at the theater ahead of you.
