Support your local co-op! Central City Co-Op, which sells their entirely local and organic produce at Discovery Green on Sundays, is now selling food in an additional location in Montrose at Taft Street (a coffee house / church / art gallery / local community space) on Wednesdays. To help support Central City's activities, which includes donating all unsold produce to local non-profits like the Salvation Army and supporting local, organic farmers, a garage sale is being held this Saturday, July 11, at Fixers Automotive in the Heights. The Central City folks will be selling new and used goods as well as $8 carwash tickets from 8 a.m. to noon. The carwash tickets are good at Bubbles Express on Washington Avenue until December 22, and 50 percent of the proceeds go to support Central City.
Feeling more carnivorous? Head over to Sam Houston Race Park on Saturday for the Inaugural BBQ Cook-Off featuring the Eli Young Band with Jeff Boortz and the Carter Twins. The barbecue cook-off starts at 11:30 a.m., and ten teams will compete for a $300 prize and a luxury suite at the horse-racing track. Only ribs will be prepared in this year's competion, but perhaps future years will see the playing field expanded to brisket, pork butt and sausage.
If you missed the one-night-only Cafe Montrose dinner last week, you're in for some good news. By popular demand, Catherine Duwez is hosting yet another Belgian dinner. This time, the meal will be held at the Broken Spoke at 1809 Washington Avenue. Because the two seating times didn't work out logistically at the last dinner, this affair is wholly different.
Catherine's famous Belgian dishes will be served Friday and Saturday, July 10 and 11, from 5 to 11 p.m., in addition to the regular Broken Spoke menu. In all, seven different entrees are available (such as chicken waterzooi and four different mussels dishes), starting at $22. The price includes a basket of frites and a mixed salad. Beer will be available for purchase, but patrons are invited to bring their own wine if desired.
