7th Annual Urban Harvest Tomato Fest

To me, tomatoes are one of summer's quintessential foods. I think of a crisp salad with juicy, ripe tomatoes or fresh sliced tomatoes with just a sprinkle of sea salt. There is so much to do with this versatile fruit and, of course, the best tomatoes can be found at your local farmers' market.

Urban Harvest is once again celebrating the peak Texas tomato season with the annual Tomato Fest. This year the celebration is extended to all three of their farmers' markets, with events running through next week.

The festivities kick off at The Highland Village Farmers Market this Sunday. You can sample recipes using fresh tomatoes at the Chef's Corner with Williams Sonoma. Events continue at the City Hall Farmers Market where Sur La Table will demo recipes. Things wrap up at the Eastside Farmers Market where it will be Official Tomato Fest Day. The "Tomato Doctor," Dr. Bob Randall, is back to provide tips on your very own tomato garden and Paul Petronella of Paulie's will be on hand to serve freshly made gazpacho.

Expect live music, a lot of sampling and plenty of other local products as well. Below is the schedule of events at the three farmers markets. As always, admission is free.

Highland Village Farmers Market (2720 Suffolk) - Sunday, June 5th, 10am-2pm

City Hall Farmers Market (400 Rusk) - Wednesday, June 8th, 11am - 2pm

Eastside Farmers Market (3000 Richmond) - Saturday, June 11th, 8am - noon
