100 Favorite Dishes 2012: No. 76, Spinach Danish from Angela's Oven

This year leading up to our annual Best of Houston® issue, we're counting down our 100 favorite dishes in Houston. This list comprises our favorite dishes from the last year, dishes that are essential to Houston's cultural landscape and/or dishes that any visitor (or resident) should try at least once.

There is never a question for me of what to order at Catalina Coffee: two cortados -- one for drinking immediately and one for the road -- and a spinach Danish made by Heights bakery Angela's Oven.

Unlike Angela's sweet breakfast Danishes in Catalina's case decorated with berries, the spinach Danish is a savory, salty way to start your day, which is always my preference (the older I get, the more my sweet tooth diminishes). I'd rather have the vegetal bite of spinach and the salty creaminess of soft cheese underneath than a sugary, dessert-type Danish any day. Add to that the flakiness of the buttery Danish itself that Angela's is known for (the bakery also makes a mean croissant, as you'd imagine), and I'm set.

If you don't want to swing by Catalina, you can also find Angela's pastries, breads and other baked goods at farmers' markets around town as well as the bakery itself, set in a "little red barn" on Aurora and Harvard in the Heights.
