100 Favorite Dishes: No. 98, Veggie Tacos from Radical Eats

This year leading up to our annual Best of Houston issue, we're counting down our 100 favorite dishes in Houston. This list comprises our favorite dishes from the last year, dishes that are essential to Houston's cultural landscape and/or dishes that any visitor (or resident) should try at least once.

It's difficult to tell, but under all that crunchy red cabbage lay two of the finest tacos I've tasted in Houston -- and they didn't come from a taco truck.

That's normally my standard for great tacos, after all. Fatty meat, hot corn tortillas, cilantro, onion and lime. So I was shocked to find myself enjoying these all-veggie tacos during my first visit to Heights Ashbury Coffeehouse. Tucked inside each charmingly handmade tortilla were fried green tomatoes and fried avocado, so we're not talking ultra-healthy here, obviously. But we are talking ultra-delicious.

The tortillas themselves fell apart rather quickly, but that didn't stop me from eating every single bite of their contents, greedily stabbing the crispy, cornmeal-battered vegetables with my fork. Between these tacos and the Viola Lee at Greatfull Taco, I'm hoping that the fried green tomato taco trend will catch on for the summer; I'm already fully on board.

Sadly, Radical Eats is no longer serving food at Heights Ashbury. But it's for a good reason: the company -- which, until recently, has sold its tamales and other wares at farmers' markets and local haunts like Heights Ashbury -- now has a brick-and-mortar location of its own at 3903 Fulton. With an expanded menu and new hours, I'm eager to see what Radical Eats comes up with next.

The list so far:

No. 100: Dumplings at Heights Asian Cafe No. 99: Mixta Pizza at Friends Pizzeria
