Texas Johnny Brown A Star In Mississippi Too

Rocks Off would like to congratulate one of the stars of this week's "Old School" cover story, Texas Johnny Brown, who will receive a marker on the Mississippi Blues Trail this weekend.

The monument for Brown, 83, will be dedicated at 4 p.m. Saturday in downtown Ackerman in Brown's native Choctaw County. Brown and his Quality Blues Band will perform a post-dedication concert after a "meet Texas Johnny Brown" reception at the Choctaw County Economic Development Foundation office. Hope the weather holds out.

Brown's marker will be the 139th monument on the Mississippi Blues Trail, a statewide series of monuments commemorating important people, venues, record labels, and even migration patterns ("Mississippi to Alabama"; "Mississippi to Maine") in the state's rich blues history. The Mississippi Blues Commission has also placed out-of-state markers in Chicago, Memphis, Helena, Ark., and Ferriday, La.

The blues trail has also been mentioned as a model for a possible Houston blues "Walk of Fame," which Rocks Off told you about Thursday. Should that come to pass, Brown would be in good company - twice. Congrats, Johnny.
