Bayou Beat: Three Fantastic on NPR, Beyonce Leads MTV Noms, Rocks Off Seeking Intern, More Live Nation Deals, etc.

Congratulations to Houston's Three Fantastic, whose "Hot Summer Day" was chosen as NPR's "Song of the Day" Wednesday. Comparing it to "one of those half-remembered Sugar Ray hits from a decade ago," NPR's David Browne is a little taken aback by the band's idea of a "glorious summer day": "As the music revs up, the litany of environmental disasters continues," he writes. "Trees burn to cinders and oceans boil; even the air conditioners are at loose ends." Sounds like Houston to us - every day around here is an environmental catastrophe lately.

To absolutely no one's surprise, Beyonce's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)" has been nominated in every category it possibly could be for this years MTV Video Music Awards, including Video of the Year, Best Female Video, Best Pop Video and six others.

Rocks Off is looking for a fall intern to help with various music-related writing and photography duties. Applicants must be in college and receive course credit for the internship. Email [email protected] to apply.

Quickly running out of summer amphitheater shows, Live Nation has expanded its weekly "No Service Fee" promotion to its smaller venues, including Houston's House of Blues and Verizon Wireless Theater (for example, the "Big Hot Threesome" with Pitbull, LMFAO and Paradiso girls at Verizon August 28). The 24-hour promotion begins at midnight at www.livenation.com.

  • From sixshot.com: Courthouse News reports that Mary Anderson of Houston has filed a complaint in Harris County District Court claiming rapper Method Man, who plays House of Blues Friday with Redman and Ghostface, shot her six times with a pellet gun from inside his tour bus as she waited for him to autograph a concert ticket. Anderson is seeking punitive damages for assault, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence and gross negligence.

  • The HPMAs' Best New Act this year, Roky Moon & BOLT, play live on KTRU's The Local Show tonight at 8 p.m.

  • Meanwhile, 2009's Best Female Vocalist Kristine Mills (above) has been invited to play this year's Brazilian International Jazz Festival, and best EP winners the Wild Moccasins are already recording new material. The band hopes to have a single out by SXSW 10 and a full-length by next summer.

  • They didn't win Best Metal last week, but Metavenge has been added to the bill at Friday's Cruefest at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. Not a bad consolation prize at all. Also, rumor has it scouts from RCA Records were scoping the quartet at last month's HPMA showcase.
