The Best Girl Pop Evar From 1987-89

In just mere hours, Kylie Minogue will hit the stage at Verizon Wireless Theater, and Rocks Off will be there bearing the beautiful pop brunt of Miss Minogue. The Australian pop superstar is touring behind last year's Aphrodite album.

Recently her set lists have been running almost 25 songs long, leaning heavily on the new album and about the past three or so, back to 2002's hard-hitting Fever, which included the icy smash single "Can't Get You Out Of My Head," which we couldn't get out of our heads.

American audiences were first given a taste of Aussie pop pinup Minogue with 1987's hit cover of Little Eva's Goffin/King-penned "The Loco-Motion," and since then she has managed to stay relevant both here and abroad while aging like a fine wine, acting and recording more music.

The fact is MInogue elicits the same lustful responses in men and women alike. Her brand of electro-pop is about a million miles away than the stuff that clogs up the charts from other girls a fraction of her age (she turns 43 at the end of the month), while not sacrificing hooks, age-appropriateness and that ever-important, overriding universal attraction.

A breast-cancer scare in 2005 didn't derail her, so much as it re-calibrated her sights on more charitable causes. It would later come out in the press that the doctor misdiagnosed her.

She comes from one of the most profitable and hooky eras of girl-pop, 1987 to 1989, when malls were permanent A&R proving grounds, and hair was a mile high and the jeans were acid-washed. We made a list of the 20 best girl-pop singles from that three-year period to get you revved up for tonight's show.
