Athletes, Schmathletes

FRI 2/20

In one episode of WKRP in Cincinnati, radio DJs Venus Flytrap and Johnny Fever drink shots of booze on-air to show how alcohol affects coordination, judgment and reaction time. Venus reacts as you'd expect, getting falling-down drunk. But the more Johnny drinks, the quicker he becomes. It's as if alcohol actually inverts his natural lethargy and creates a Superman, fueled by ethanol. Most of us who pass our time in bars shooting pool, throwing darts or playing foosball probably end up acting like Venus by the end of the night. But a few others sink more balls the more they drink. Whether or not you've got the strange metabolism of Johnny Fever, if you like to do something extra with your buzz, Clubmonkey Sports is introducing just the thing for you: Bar Olympics. Teams compete in pool (eight-ball, nine-ball), darts, shuffleboard, air hockey, trivia, pinball and board games like Candyland, Battleship and Hungry Hungry Hippos.

This long overdue concept premieres Friday night at Clubmonkey's Winter/Spring Kickoff Party and Bar Olympiad at Outback Pub. You can also sign up for seasonal sports like softball, coed flag football and even "flickball," which many of us refer to as "paper football" and perfected in the grade-school lunchroom. 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, February 20. 3100 Fountanview. For information, call 713-522-0881 or visit www.clubmonkey.com. $10 cover; league fees vary by sport. -- Eric Norvell

Hook, Line and Sinker

WED 2/25

Gone fishin'? We hope not, lest you miss the annual Houston Fishing Show, a hookin' and guttin' free-for-all that's been a Gulf Coast institution for the past 29 years. This year's emphasis will be on fishing tackle and fishing boats...which seems pretty broad, if you ask us. Maybe next year the focus will be on floppy hats and live bait. With tons of clinics and hordes of vendors, the show should be a whopper: The organizers have billed it as "the largest consumer fishing show in the nation." They might as well have stretched out their arms and said the show's gonna be "this big." Noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday, February 25, through Sunday, February 29. George R. Brown Convention Center, 1001 Avenida de las Americas. For more information, call 281-350-2741 or visit www.houstonfishingshow.com. $7. -- Keith Plocek
