MON 8/4
Kim McGraw teaches middle school at The Kinkaid School. "I've got them right in that preteen block," she says, "and they're just starting to preen like crazy." It's not surprising, then, that when McGraw asked her female students about the perfect summer camp, they came up with Bend and Snap, a "get fabulous" camp for girls ages 12 to 15. "What I'm trying to do," says McGraw, "is build their self-confidence right before school starts. You know how they think: 'This year's gonna be different'; 'I'm gonna be popular'; 'All the boys are gonna love me.'"

And how will such lofty goals be accomplished? Why, via power yoga, belly dancing, makeovers (a MAC makeup artist will give the girls a lesson) and fashion discussions. But McGraw wants to make clear that the camp will get girls fabulous on the inside too, learning crafts, games and manners -- specifically, how to write a thank-you note and how to answer the phone. "When they call each other," says McGraw, "they're so rude." 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, August 4, through Friday, August 8; and Monday, August 11, to Friday, August 15. Lucia's Garden, 2216 Portsmouth. For information, call 713-376-2727 or visit www.invisiblebus.com. $175; $300 for both weeks. -- Cathy Matusow
