David Sedaris's
Santaland Diaries is the world-renowned author/humorist's tale of working as an elf in the Christmas wonderland display at Macy's New York. So as you can guess, it's a stocking filled with sarcasm and biting wit. Sedaris's plastic wonderland is filled with stilted Santas, crying children and reason-for-the-season-forgetting parents. "But the nice thing about Sedaris is, he's not saying, 'Screw Christmas.' He's saying, 'There is a piece of heart in it, but it's just not all the commercial crap,'" says actor Todd Waite.
The nine-year Alley Theatre veteran will add his own flair to the theatrical version of Sedaris's story for the second year in a row. As anyone familiar with Sedaris's work knows, it's not easy to tackle his dry style - especially when it's dressed up in tights and jingly shoes. But so far, so good. "[Last year,] a lot of people responded very positively," Waite says. 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays; 6 and 9 p.m. Fridays, 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturdays, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Through December 27. 615 Texas. For information, call 713-220-5700 or visit www.alleytheatre.org. $30 to $49.
Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: Nov. 28. Continues through Dec. 27, 2009
