Joan Rivers

You can call her brash and make as much fun of her facelifts as you’d like — but you can’t deny that Joan Rivers is one-of-a-kind. The stand-up comedian, would-be Celebrity Apprentice, talk show host and author will appear today as part of the Brilliant Lecture Series in a Las Vegas-style performance, showing how humor and chutzpah can help in the wake of disaster. (Besides the ups and downs of her life in showbiz, Rivers has seen her share of personal tragedy — her husband committed suicide in 1987.) The trash-talking Rivers should nail the format: She headlined in Vegas in the ‘80s. Truly devoted fans can shell out $150 to meet the woman in person at a post-performance VIP reception. Just watch what you wear: Once the fashion police, always the fashion police. 8 p.m. Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, 800 Bagby. For information, call 713-974-1335 or visit www.brilliantlectures.org. $25 to $40.
