Extraterrestrial abduction, the Mafia, the trouble with scientific theory - all this and more is on the bill at this year's 12th Annual Festival of Originals, or FOO, as the folks from Theatre Southwest affectionately call their annual production. The show is made up of five new "perfectly constructed 20-minute plays," according to Mimi Holloway, the producer of the festival. Holloway says the FOO one-acts offer comedy, drama and something in between. Better Living Through Science by Lauren Tunnell Verdeyen examines the lives of smarty-pants scientists who can’t figure out how to get along with people. Verdeyen's comedy, Holloway says, gives us a "young scientist who tries to apply some of the theories Einstein has written about" to everyday life. Other one-acts include The Wrong Door by George Rapier, a "wonderful" drama about a man who thinks he's walking into a meeting, goes through the wrong door and ends up in a room with a bunch of Mafia types. Marriage, trailer parks and a "funny, funny" play about mixed-up identities also take a turn in this year's festival. In 2008, the event was so popular, Theatre Southwest was turning folks away, prompting the company to extend this year's run - get your tickets early. 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, with one 3 p.m. performance Sunday, July 26.
