Kinetic artist Luis Tomasello is currently enjoying a celebration of his art from the 1960s and '70s by collectors and critics alike. Work from earlier in his career could easily overshadow his latest pieces, except for this: His new work is equally impressive, as the exhibit Luis Tomasello: "Recent Work" shows. "There's a subtle movement to all of his paintings," says Annalisa Palmieri, assistant director of Sicardi Gallery. "We use the term 'painting' loosely, because they are very sculptural as well. With this work, you have to move in order to see the whole work. Depending on how the sun shines on it or how the light is during the day, it's a different piece. You can't just stand in front of it like a landscape. [He isn't] trying to depict reality, [he's] trying to involve the viewer." The 93-year-old Tomasello includes works from three different series in this exhibit, including Objet Plastique, Atmosphere Chromoplastique and the black-on-black paintings from the Lumiere Noire. 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays.
