"Painting the Cosmos: Science and the Art of Frederic Edwin Church"

In the mid-19th century, American artists were considered inferior to their European counterparts. Then 33-year-old Frederic Edwin Church came along with The Heart of the Andes, an idealized, detailed landscape that reflected the start of a new era in American art. Cotopaxi, a painting from the same series as The Heart of the Andes and part of the MFAH's permanent collection, anchors "Painting the Cosmos: Science and the Art of Frederic Edwin Church." (There's also a study of The Heart of the Andes.) The exhibit examines the influence science and literature had on his work. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 12:15 to 7 p.m. Sundays. Through September 27. For information, call 713-639-7300 or visit www.mfah.org. Free to $7.
