The Power of Movement

The Houston dance scene is an unusually chummy one; it's routine to see several companies perform together or a handful of choreographers unite to make moves. But The Power of Movement, today's one-night-only event hosted by Dance/USA, a dance trade group, is quite literally a must-see lineup of not several but every top company in Houston. The Houston Ballet will dispatch three of its best male dancers for Hans van Manen's precise, powerful Solo, set to music by Bach, and the Houston Metropolitan Dance Company dips into its repertory for Tidal Intersections, set to the modern classical music of Philip Glass. The Dominic Walsh Dance Theater will present an excerpt from Walsh's I Napoletani, while Revolve Dance Company will move to the music of Ani DiFranco with Philosophy. Joining them are Suchu Dance, the Sandra Organ Dance Company, Travesty Dance Group, Dance of Asian America, Psophonia and Urban Souls. Don't expect a theme; the only thing all these varied dance companies share is a commitment to excellence. Feel the power and some pride beginning at 8 p.m. Wortham Theater Center, 501 Texas. For information, call 713-227-2787 or visit www.houstonballet.org. $17 to $32.
