Fan of
The Grudge? How about
The Ring? Don't mention it too loud, or film geeks will quickly accost you and give due praise to the Japanese, who are responsible for the original (and scarier, by all accounts) versions of these mega-hits.
Tonight, Rice Cinema screens another original Japanese fright-night film, Honogurai mizu no soko kara (Dark Water), which was directed by Hideo Nakata, also responsible for the original Ring. "Creepy" is an understatement for this one, which centers on a mother and daughter who move into an apartment in Tokyo that harbors a dark secret and a few...apparitions. The American version of this one, starring Jennifer Connelly, didn't translate as the other films did, but don't let a bad remake spook you away from the real thing. Rice University, 6100 Main. For information, call 713-348-3138 or visit www.rice-cinema.rice.edu. $6.
