East Meets West

Let’s face it: Relations between China and the West aren’t in tip-top shape right now (see the recent torch-extinguishing episode in France). Fortunately, performing arts pros rarely let themselves get caught up in the political kerfuffle, so tonight’s East Meets West dance concert at the Miller Outdoor Theatre will eschew politics to focus on innovative, diverse movement from around the world.

Dance of Asian America, a local Chinese-American troupe, will present classical and contemporary dance from assorted regions of China. Also performing will be Revolve Dance Company, a contemporary troupe that combines ballet, modern, tap and jazz; the spiritually geared Ad Deum Dance Company, which will be premiering a new work; and Barbara King Dance Company, which will present “a collage of ballroom dance styles.” Consider it a preview of the Olympics’ opening ceremonies — but free of boycotts (and the 8 a.m. start time). 8 p.m. 100 Concert Drive, Hermann Park.
