Golden Axe

Forget Obama and Hillary — the issue truly dividing Americans today is real metal vs. hipster metal, which Spin said last month is the “tastes great/less filling debate of our generation.” That may be the case — does anyone who grew up listening to Slayer and Saxon own a Sword record, or vice versa? — but Houston riffaholics Golden Axe know there’s a third way; tastes great or less filling, you get just as wasted either way. Realizing guitar and drums cranked to SST-like levels are all that’s required to call down Valhalla, the duo plays to the D&D crowd with titles like “Visit the Wisard” (sic) and “Pay the Toll Bridge Troll.” The music traces a limb-strewn trajectory between Master of Puppets and The Number of the Beast, which 20-sided dice-throwers will no doubt recall as the soundtrack to all those ass kickings in their high school bathroom or parking lot. Can’t we all just get along? The Jonx and Awake start things off at 9 p.m. The Mink/Backroom, 3718 Main. For information, call 713-522-9985 or visit www.themink.org. $5.
