We asked video artist John DeKam to explain his upcoming show, DeKam vs. Nalepa, the last of this years Bayou City Soundscapes series. Its improvised. Its kinda abstract, architectural, geometric, textural. Okay, abstract video, textural music, we got it.
The thing thats special about this show is the projection and the site that were doing the projection on. Were all under the old Sabine Bridge, so DJ Nalepa will be [playing] music and then Ill be doing the visuals. The visuals will be projected all over the surfaces of the bridge with a moving mirror projection system. What all that means is that Im sort of -spinning video while the DJ spins records. The projectors can move the video around. And what exactly will he be screening? Mostly just stuff from QVC television, he deadpans. (DeKam will actually be using bits from the many movies hes made and some recent European shoots.) Its multimedia art, but its also just a chill-out party, DeKam says. Well, why didnt you say that in the first place? 7 p.m. Sabine Promenade (near Sabine and Memorial). For information, call 713-743-5548 or visit www.buffalo-bayou.org. Free.
