Mariachi Invitational

Six groups take turns trying to win over the audience and the judges during this year’s Mariachi Invitational, performing classics of the often dramatic, often lively music. At the end of Saturday’s preliminary session, the semi-finalists are chosen. They’ll face off during Sunday’s Go Tejano Day festivities, with the two finalists competing between the La Arrolladora Banda el Limon and La Leyenda performances. (For a bit of extra luck, competing groups might take a hint from last year’s two semi-finalists and wear red. The 2010 winner, San Antonio’s Mariachi Las Alteñas, and first runner-up, Laredo’s Mariachi Los Arrieros, both wore deep burgundy.) See the Invitational at 6 p.m. Saturday. Verizon Wireless Theater, 520 Texas. $22.50 to $32.50. See the semi-finals at 11 a.m. The Hideout, 1 Reliant Park. $7. See the finals at 3:45 p.m. RodeoHouston, 1 Reliant Park. $18 to $300.
