What is it about Texas that makes it a recognizable place in our imaginations? Artist Leigh Merrill asks that question in her new show “Into the Sunset,” currently at Lawndale Art Center. Her meticulously crafted digital photographs are composed of up to hundreds of photographic snippets — what may look like a single photograph at a distance becomes a fabricated composite image when inspected closely. She grafts together scenes, both rural and urban, that explore how architecture reflects our notions of regional identity and beauty. For “Into the Sunset,” Merrill focused her lens on North Texas, turning our state’s most nondescript and arguably least romanticized region into a desolate embodiment of the American West.
