13th Annual Moores School of Music Jazz Festival

Not too many trombonists manage to gain repute as solo artists, but the Los Angeles-based Andy Martin is a definite exception. The evidence? He’s featured on albums by Coldplay and Michael Bublé as well as on the soundtracks of American Idol, Family Guy, American Dad and King of the Hill — oh, and he’s released eight albums of his own. This weekend, Martin will headline the 13th Annual Moores School of Music Jazz Festival. The two-day celebration will feature competitions among middle- and high-school jazz bands as well as an evening performance by the Texas Music Festival Jazz Project, a big-band ensemble featuring remarkable musicians from all over the state. But the main attraction is certainly Martin. The Texas Music Festival Jazz Project performs at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Martin will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and lead two music clinics at noon on both Friday and Saturday. University of Houston, 4800 Calhoun Road. For a full schedule, call 713-743-3388 or visit www.uhjazz.com. $15.
