Dating Hazard

By their very nature, blind dates are supposed to entail a certain amount of surprise. So I waited and waited and waited in the reception area of Kim Son (2001 Jefferson, 713-222-2461). Finally I resigned myself to the fact that I'd be dining alone, and for that I needed a drink. The menu listed half a dozen classic cocktails (piña coladas, Singapore slings), along with wine and beer. But I was looking for something different. "I want whatever he's having," I said to the waiter, pointing to the guy at the next table who had been talking with such animation that he'd knocked over his date's drink. The waiter returned with something he called a Tiki Tumbler, a froufrou drink if ever there was one. The only thing missing was the signature umbrella -- and of course, my date.

Kim Son's Tiki Tumbler:
1 1/2 ounces Bacardi Light rum
3/4 ounce DeKuyper Creme de Almond
Splash of orange juice
Splash of pineapple juice
Splash of sour mix
1 maraschino cherry
1 sliced orange wedge

In a pint glass or cocktail shaker filled with ice, add above ingredients sans the cherry and orange. Shake well and pour into a Tom Collins glass. Using a plastic cocktail spear, garnish with cherry and orange slice.
