Girls Rock Camp Showcase

It's hard to believe 2011 is only Girls Rock Camp's second year in Houston. Last year the week-long series of seminars where local musicians teach the next generation (ages 8-18) the fundamentals of stagecraft and songwriting – as well as workshops on body image and women in rock history – proved so popular that the 30 available slots for this year's camp filled up in a week. Like last year, the campers will split into six bands and work up one song apiece for Sunday's end-of-camp showcase, which has already become a highlight of the local music scene's traditionally slow summer season. "The girls really pulled it together," camp director Anna Garza told our Rocks Off music blog last year. "Everyone was tearing up. You know when you make the guys cry you've really done something."
