Pat Jasper, a member of the Houston Arts Alliance's Folklife + Traditional Arts Program, plays down her role in putting together
''Anointed and Adorned: Indian Weddings in Houston.'' It wasn't rocket science to figure out that we could do a pretty spectacular exhibition once we got a good look at [photographer] Sohil Maknojia's material.'' According to Jasper, the show examines the issues of tradition versus modernity, particularly as celebrated during Indian weddings.
''What struck me about Sohil's work is that as a trained art photographer using his skill set to make a living as a wedding photographer, he didn't relinquish the artistic aspects of his work. He's able to document an event and also achieve an intimacy that gets you up close to the traditions involved in Indian weddings. We knew that we wanted to share with people some of the aesthetic load of Indian weddings. They're about adorning this moment with color, sound and sensation.''
An audio installation by Rati Ramadas Girish accompanies the exhibit.
