The 2006 documentary
The Bridge is a provocative and controversial look at suicide. Filmmaker Eric Steel (seen above) and his crew spent all of 2004 documenting the many suicides — and suicide attempts — at the Golden Gate Bridge. The crew later interviewed survivors and relatives of the dead. Among them is survivor Ken Baldwin, who explained, “I instantly realized that everything in my life that I’d thought was unfixable was totally fixable — except for having just jumped.”
At the time of the film’s release, Steel and his crew were criticized for not attempting to stop any of the suicides they filmed. The fact that Steel interviewed family members of the dead without telling them that he had film of the suicides also caused some controversy. Difficult to watch, The Bridge has an intense emotional impact on viewers.
