Fellow funnyman Conan O’Brien is responsible — at least partially — for helping Deon Cole launch his comedy career. In 2009, Cole delivered a set on The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien that landed him a spot in Tonight’s writer’s room. Then Leno returned to the Tonight show desk, rendering O’Brien, Cole and apparently a bunch of other staff jobless. But only briefly. Cole followed O’Brien to Conan the next year. Now he’s back on the road and playing the Houston Improv for a three-night run. “You’ve really got to work out and stuff. When I first got out here, they gave me this trainer,” Cole, a Chicago native, says of his introduction to Los Angeles in a Conan After-Hours clip, compliments of a 2012 upload from Team Coco. “I really didn’t want this, but he came up to me and said, ‘Yeah, we’re going to work you out. We’re going to work on your tri’s, your bi’s, but the most important thing is, you can’t eat late at night, or you’re going to get fat.’ And I’m like, ‘I’m going to eat late at night!’ And he said, ‘You’re not supposed to!’ And I’m like, ‘Well then, why did they put a light in the refrigerator?’ I’m too smart for that fool!” 8 p.m. Thursday, 8 and 10:30 p.m. Friday, 7 and 9:30 p.m. Saturday. 7620 Katy Freeway.
