Next to Normal

The rock musical Next to Normal tackles bipolar disorder from the point of view of a family. With a depth of emotion and love, the heartwarming story — book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey and music by Tom Kitt — is anchored by its realistic depiction. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2010, and 11 Tony nominations. The story follows Diana, the mother of a suburban family. She’s bipolar, and the affliction is worsening, with family members desperately searching for ways to help. The show’s powerful songs capture the family’s hopes and disappointments and elevate the events into universal strivings, which results in, perhaps paradoxically, an upbeat musical drama. Producer John Lazo said Standing Room Only Productions, which is presenting the musical, will “use this unique artistic opportunity to reach out to the mental health community and not only entertain our audiences, but raise awareness and enlighten them about the serious impact that bipolar disorder and depression have on families nationwide and here in Houston.”
