The
WindSync wind quintet calls Houston home, and while the group has enjoyed impressive success internationally with acclaimed performances at the Shanghai Oriental Arts Center and the Washington Performing Arts Society and a sold-out concert at Carnegie Hall, today’s show marks the first time the group will perform at Hobby Center for the Performing Arts. Tracy Jacobson, WindSync bassoonist, explains the situation this way: “In Houston, we’re really focused on playing small, intimate places, on doing lots of community outreach. We’ve performed in large concert halls internationally, but this is the first time to [bring our program] back to Houston and show [local fans] what we’ve been doing everywhere else.”
The program features David Maslanka’s Quintet for Winds No. 3 as well as original WindSync arrangements of works by Ravel, Bernstein and Respighi. “David Maslanka’s music has become our signature style. He writes modern American music that sounds cinematic and grand in scope. We’ll also be performing our own arrangement of Ravel’s Bolero. The piece was originally written for a large orchestra. The centerpiece is a snare drum, and each of us alternates playing the drum and picking up [other] instruments. It’s very exciting. Both of those were big hits in China and Taiwan, where we were touring in December.”
