Flying High

The story of poor, doomed Icarus — and how his hubris caused him to fly too close to the sun, which melted his wax-and-feather wings, plunging him to death by drowning in the sea — is one of Greek mythology’s most endearing stories (not to mention a handy metaphor for the careers of some politicians and entertainers…). The Baroque music-based Ars Lyrica Houston opens its 2014-15 season with a musical take on the story — as well as some of the more celebratory stirrings of the airborne — in Flying High. French and Italian Baroque chamber works — some of which are nimble-footed dances — illustrate the tale. It features French-Italian soprano Céline Ricci (shown above) and viola da gambist Mary Springfels as spotlighted players.
