Famed filmmaker François Truffaut made his feature debut in 1959 with the stunning The 400 Blows (Les quatre cents coups). Now considered a French New Wave-era masterpiece, the film launches the series Truffaut: On Childhood, a celebration of the 30th anniversary of the filmmaker’s death, at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Jean-Pierre Léaud stars as an intelligent young boy who turns to petty crime for attention as a result of his parents’ emotional neglect. The intersection of the boy’s curiosity and natural inclination toward mischief with a lack of adult supervision lands him in plenty of trouble, eventually leaving him to contemplate his uncertain future while stuck at a reform school. Truffaut’s 1957 Les mistons, an 18-minute short film starring Léaud as one of five children who spend a summer cheekily spying on a pair of lovers, screens along with The 400 Blows.
