El Grito featuring Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles

As independence day celebrations go, Mexico’s annual El Grito is one of the loudest. In a vocal celebration of Mexico’s freedom, millions of revelers in Mexico and beyond (including Houston) gather to partake in the cries of Viva! The tradition mirrors the historical roots of Mexico’s revolution, in which Father Miguel Hidalgo gave a stirring battle cry, or grito, urging the townspeople to rise up against French colonial rule. (It worked.) This year’s annual celebration at Miller Outdoor Theatre, El Grito featuring Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles, features the all-women mariachi group that’s been gathering accolades for its virtuosity and style.
