It was 1960 and a group of men in Houston set out to build a “room.” Not just any “room;” mind you. They wanted to build the largest “room” in the world. It had to be big enough to hold an entire baseball field, bright enough to grow grass with natural light and air-conditioned (1960-era smokers were still allowed to puff away in public back then). Their story and the story of the “room” they built is the story in James Gast’s new book, The Astrodome: Building an American Spectacle, presented as part of the History in Print Author series by Preservation Houston and the Heritage Society.
