Sheila Frampton Cooper, an award-winning artist who will be among the hundreds attending the 2014 International Quilt Festival/Houston, wants to be clear: She makes art, not blankets. Cooper, who was originally a painter, is one of the quilting world’s rising stars even though, in the strict sense of the word, she doesn’t actually make quilts. “There are three layers and they’re sewn together, so I guess you could call what I make a quilt. And you could throw it on your bed if you wanted to and you had enough money. It’s art, and like other art, my work can cost thousands of dollars, but if you wanted to throw it on your bed, I guess you can,” she tells us, laughing.

Cooper is at one end of the spectrum of artists, crafters and makers who’ll be at the festival. At the other end are people who create functional quilts meant to be used on a bed. Between the two are creators of every sort including those who hand-sew every seam, those who use ever-complicated quilting machines (think a sewing machine on growth hormones), those who make their designs on computer screens and those who freehand the entire project from start to finish. Finished works will be on display during the festival. Dozens of competitions, workshops, classes and demonstrations are on the schedule as well.
