Houston’s Ebony Opera Guild Annual Opera Gems Concert — Opera in the Black 2

There’s only one performance of Houston’s Ebony Opera Guild Annual Opera Gems Concert — Opera in the Black 2. A showcase of Houston’s African-American opera singers, the program includes musical highlights from Carmen, Porgy and Bess, West Side Story and others. Jason Oby, artistic director of the Houston Ebony Opera Guild, comments: “Part music and part narrative, the concert is a musical revue of historical events that led to the arrival of several of the most exciting operatic singers to the world stage. The great Leontyne Price was the diva who paved the road for Grace Bumbry, Martina Arroyo, Shirley Verrett and a flood of African-American operatic prima donnas. There were also men; Robert McFerrin Sr., father of the Grammy Award vocalist [Bobby] McFerrin, was the first to bow at the NYC Metropolitan Opera in a solo role.”
