Discover Dance 2015 isn’t the usual “fans-sit-here, dancers-dance-there” type of festival. “In developing this festival, we embraced the fact that there is a big overlap between people who love to dance and people who love to watch dance,” says Andrea Cody, founding director of Dance Houston. No one’s expected to stay in his or her seat during Discover Dance — in fact, performers will routinely pull fans up onstage throughout the festival. “When people see dance performances, they are often inspired to dance but expected to sit in their seats. We wanted to create an experience that encourages everyone to dance, whether they are performers or not. There are performances, social dances and mini-workshops scheduled throughout the afternoon.”
Among the performers set for the festival is METdance, winner of our 2014 Best of Houston® Best Dance Company. Dancers Kerry Jackson and Risa D’Souza are performing Round 2, a contemporary duet choreographed by jhon r. stronks, a 2014 MasterMind winner. The duo originally performed the work in 2008 when both were members of Houston Met II, the company’s pre-professional troupe. Jackson and D’Souza, now mature members of the professional company, worked with stronks to revisit and restructure it.
